What is Nature Planning?
We humans learn from a variety of sources in our search for more effective ways of living
and working. For the past 35 years, a small committed group of thinkers and general
systems researchers has explored the myriad ways nature uses to sustain, expand and
enhance the web of life. We have learned from these years of study that nature has much
to teach us about how to succeed on this planet. We have also learned that nature has
provided blueprints for achieving success, ones that cannot fail. Nature planning is the
application of these blueprints to human endeavors in order to achieve greater success not
only for the human family but for all life.
As one example, here is what nature's blueprint means in the behavior of growth. Nature
builds into all ordered processes of growth and change a guaranteed progression of four
stages:
- self-maintenance (gathering)
- self-replication (repeating)
- interdependence and synergy resulting from the union of differences (sharing)
- passage into a more creative and life-enhancing form of contribution (transforming)
The most obvious example of these stages is the development of a human being. The child
gathers in size and understanding of the world around him/her. The young adult chooses a
mate to replicate a new life. Then, as those children leave the nest, the older adult must
redefine and reinvent his/her life, integrating old interests and activities with new areas of
exploration. Finally, the elder adult develops wisdom and soul awareness in preparation for
the transition to a new state of being.
Nature Planning Design Principles and their application to
the creation of Communiversities - Below are some of the
principles which have emerged from our study of nature's
wisdom:
- seeking organic and natural designs and models for our social inventions, thereby
producing projects and solutions that will enhance life;
- doing more with less effort and fewer resources as a principle and practice worthy
of becoming part of the architecture of our endeavors
- believing that all citizens are capable of bringing about change in their living
environments, their communities and their world;
- building a knowledge architecture so that all learning can be shared with everyone
- removing obstacles to and creating avenues for transformation; and
- building conscious, creative, collaborative, compassionate community as an essential
goal and set of skills.
